This visit allows visitors to enjoy stunning highland landscapes and imposing pre-Inca architecture. The site is strategically positioned on the top of a peninsula surrounded by a beautiful lagoon called Umayo lagoon…The archaeological site of Sillustani was a cemetery built in the XIII century by a civilization that occupied the area before the Inka domination. The creators of the imposing cylinder burial towers are known as Kolla people. The most imposing burial towers were built for the chiefs and priests.
For our ancient cultures, the cemeteries were important resting places for the deceased people. Therefore, our ancestors would strategically choose for burial ground exceptionally beautiful spots. Cemeteries were considered sacred places…When walking around this peninsula; we can feel the energy that emanates from this site. Many people come to appreciate this unique view of the vast highland surrounded by the Andean mountains and the beautiful lagoon Umayo, they cannot go away without feeling their hearts recharged with peace.
The pre-Inca Sillustani funeral towers lie next to the Umayo Lake and form part of one of the largest and most important necropolis in the world. Used by both the Altiplano civilization and the Incas and their wives “Collas” to honor their dead and in preparation for the after-life. They were abandoned when the first Spanish arrived. With over ninety chulpas (tombs), all built from volcanic rock, those for the Incas can be easily recognized by their finer detail.
Half Day tour to the Towers of Sillustani – Puno:
At 9:00 am or 13:00 hrs. Our tour guide will pick you up from your Hotel and then are conducted to the western part of Puno. The bus ride to Sillustani lasts about 45 minutes and offers along the way fine views of the Lake Titicaca. At the archaeological site of Sillustani, our local guide will show you the most important sectors of the burial site and will give us a good insight into the Andean culture. Our visit in Sillustani ends up with wonderful panoramic view if the Lake Umayo. Afterwards we will visit local farmes that live along the road. Here we will learn about the economical activity in the area, and also the farmers will explain how they plant their potatoes, breed their alpacas, vicuñas and guinea pigs. Finally we will return to Puno, getting after sunset.
Schedules : From 9:00 am or upon your arrival to the airport to Juliaca
Departure time : As your request time ( Can be arranged Puno – Sillustani or Viceverse upon your arrival to the airport of Juliaca)
Duration : This tours takes half day or can be extended with drop off at the aiport or Puno
